Teenager leads San Ramon Police on chase after collision with sporting goods store Wednesday night

SAN RAMON – Police pursued a vehicle Wednesday evening after receiving a report that a vehicle collided with the Big 5 Sporting Goods on Crow Canyon Place.

At around 10:45 pm Wednesday, dispatchers with the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office received a call from a store employee saying a vehicle had collided with the building, located in the 3200 block of Crow Canyon Place. Dispatchers relayed the information to the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District.

Shortly after, an arriving San Ramon Police officer observed a vehicle fleeing the scene. The officer signaled the driver to make a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled and officers gave chase.

As the vehicle exited the parking lot and began traveling north on Camino Ramon, officers from the Danville Police Department relayed information that the driver was 14 years old. Prior to the collision, Danville Police had received a call from the juvenile’s mother reporting that the special needs teenager had taken her vehicle and was likely driving on a road in San Ramon.

Danville officers monitored the pursuit as San Ramon officers chased the vehicle into Danville’s Greenbrook neighborhood at 45 mph. During the chase, the vehicle reportedly collided with multiple roadside properties and nearly struck other motorists on multiple occasions.

The vehicle finally became disabled near the Rose Garden Shopping Center on Camino Ramon. The vehicle, which was reportedly damaged with the tires blown out, came to a stop and the driver was detained without further incident.

Paramedics evaluated the teenager at the scene. A Big 5 Employee who was inside the store during the incident was treated for a panic attack.
