Hit and run crash into a San Ramon home prompts school lockdown Friday

SAN RAMON – A search for a suspect that fled from a traffic stop before crashing into a home prompted a school lockdown Friday morning.

At around 10:50 am Friday, an officer pulled over a vehicle for a speed violation on Alcosta Blvd near Estero Drive. After the driver initially stopped, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, police said.

Police say due to heavy fog and the vehicle’s high speeds, the officer did not initiate a pursuit.

A few minutes later, officers were dispatched to a report of a vehicle collision into a building on Veracruz Drive. Arriving officers found the same vehicle that had fled from police minutes earlier. Citizens told officers they witnessed the driver run away from the scene toward the back of the residence.

Firefighters responded to shut down utilities and stabilize the building, which was damaged as a result of the collision. Officers put Montevideo Elementary School on lockdown while they searched for the suspect.

While officers were conducting a search, a citizen on Countrybrook Loop hailed an officer reporting the suspect was hiding in a car port of the complex. An additional citizen called police reporting an individual matching the suspect’s description had hailed them offering money and jewelry for a ride back to Veracruz Drive.

Officers closed in on the suspect and took him into custody near Summerwood Loop at 12:10 pm.

Police say the suspect, 36-year-old Lenny Cabrera of Concord, was taken to the hospital before being transported to the Martinez Detention Facility. He is accused of misdemeanor evading, misdemeanor hit and run.

The Cabrera also had multiple warrants for his arrest in Contra Costa County, police said. He was wanted in Concord for felony drug and theft charges on $730,000 bail and in Pleasant Hill on drug theft and firearm charges on $355,00 bail.

A helicopter from East Bay Regional Parks District was overhead during the search but was not utilized by police. San Ramon Police and Walnut Creek Police canine teams assisted with the search.
